This project near Haslemere seeks to reconnect this Arts and Crafts family home to the extra-ordinary view over the South Downs. An oak timber-framed extension, as well as doubling the size of the existing kitchen, re-orients the family space to provide natural light and views over this amazing landscape. Designed using a combination of traditional materials with contemporary detailing the extension seeks to offer an uplifting and eco-friendly contribution to the collection of buildings in this area.
A new kitchen/dining space has been designed as the centre of the home adjacent to the new extension and provided with the glorious views. As well as reconfiguring the rest of the ground floor spaces the first and second floors have seen minor adjustments and updates to bring the house up to contemporary standards.
Considerable effort has been undertaken to turn this cold and draughty house into a warm home. Beginning with the building fabric itself the roof, walls and floors have been insulated, earlier ventilation stopped up, and secondary glazing added. A new bio-mass boiler has been fitted which, together with photo-voltaic roof panels, are expected to reduce running costs and improve overall comfort.
